This piece was conceptualized and recorded specifically in commemoration of the Juneteenth holiday. It takes the form of an electroacoustic "subterranean meditation," following my previous compositions "ablutions" and "cries&screams." To me, "prelude&lachrymal" is bitter and cynical, yet sweet and hopeful. It is an expression of inward contemplation on the travesties we as humans continue to enact upon each other, how violence and greed have shaped our individual, community, and global psyche(s); but also, how acts of kindness and love, however small they may seem on the surface, are powerful to combat such evils. It is a reminder of how far we have come with civil and human rights, and also how much more work we have left to do.

Instrumentation for this piece consists of electric piano, violoncello, field recordings of organic and inorganic sounds, digital and algorithmic synthesis, and electronic processing.
